Becoming 50 in 2019 made me reflect on the changes that brings and how my life has changed so much over the years. This led me to see how I am able to bring my lived experiences into my teachings.
My personal healing journey has come from learning how to work with coming from an upbringing that did not support a healthy wellbeing environment hence led to many years of unhealthy behaviours and patterns.
Living in a hyperalert state for many years through childhood and adult traumas, it became the ‘norm’ for me to be alert with a heightened nervous system and with difficulty relaxing I was always exhausted. Which led to diagnosis over 20yrs of PTSD, depression and GAD although I do not identify myself as a condition, I am mindful of what I need to do to look after myself and practice daily self-care.
I see now my life choices are a continued practice of engaging in healthier choices, behaviours and coming into recovery 10 years ago from addictions with daily working a 12 Step programme. By engaging in different therapies/ therapy groups over the years, practicing daily meditation, yoga, mindfulness, enjoying nutritious foods, good sleep, spending time outside, long walks, building and maintaining healthy friendships, applying personal boundaries, my life has / is continually changing.
At the beginning of 2019 I became self-employed after years of not believing I could through low self-esteem and self-doubt. Previously, I worked in many roles; British Army, mental health services, drug and alcohol services, homelessness, young mothers and baby units, ex-offenders, personal trainer, social services, military fitness instructor. Since training in my mid 40's as an Occupational Therapist, I now love studying -very different from my school years in the 80's spending a lot of time 'skiving' and leaving school without any qualifications. I am now re-training as a counsellor on a level 4 diploma and have completed level 2 & 3.
I’ve always had much interest in the body, and the body mind connection and recently learning much more about the nervous system to relate this to myself and others when teaching.
Through combining my experiences professionally and personally in my Yoga and meditation classes, 1-1’s, workshops, I endeavour to bring an awareness to the importance of maintaining a healthy body, mind, self-care and overall wellbeing.
